Della prima infanzia del futuro dittatore tedesco non si conosce granchè. Stanti le testimonianze di molti gerarchi nazisti, Hitler fu sempre molto legato al suo paese natale, tanto da farsi effigiare vicino alla chiesa di Brannau in un francobollo del 1938 commemorativo del suo genetliaco e dell'annessione dell'Austria al Terzo Reich avvenuta il mese precedente ("Anschluss"). Nelle sue memorie, Albert Speer fa riferimento a confidenze fattegli da Hitler in persona circa la giustificazione del suo amore verso la Germania in virtù del fatto che - fino alla rettifica dei confini operata al Congresso di Vienna del 1814, Brannau aparteneva al Regno di Baviera, il che è storicamente comprovato.
Alois Hitler era figlio illegittimo, e per questo da giovane utilizzò il cognome della madre, Schicklgruber. Nel 1876 adottò legalmente il cognome del padre naturale (che però non lo riconobbe mai finché fu in vita), trasformandolo da Hiedler (o Hüttler) in Hitler. Se effettivamente Alois fosse il figlio naturale di Johann Hiedler (o Hüttler) (1807-1888), il padre di Adolf sarebbe stato parente di sangue della propria moglie Klara, la cui madre si chiamava Hüttler e potrebbe essere stata sua sorellastra[4].
Il figlio Adolf non usò mai il cognome Schicklgruber. In seguito i suoi avversari politici fecero circolare delle voci che insinuavano che Hitler fosse di origine ebrea: dopo che Maria Teresa d'Austria aveva dato la cittadinanza piena agli ebrei che si convertivano al cattolicesimo, essi usavano tradurre i loro cognomi ebraici in tedesco, e Schicklgruber era un cognome comune tra gli ebrei convertiti.


La madre di Hitler
Inoltre, una diversa fonte afferma che Hitler non sapesse con certezza chi fosse stato suo nonno. Le voci che affermavano che egli fosse per un quarto ebreo sarebbero dovute al fatto che sua nonna Maria Anna Schicklgruber sarebbe rimasta incinta del padre di Adolf mentre era al servizio di una famiglia ebrea a Graz, in Austria. Il datore di lavoro di Maria (mai identificato storicamente), inoltre, le avrebbe corrisposto una cifra mensile per il mantenimento del figlio fino alla maggiore età. Tuttavia, di tali presunti versamenti non esiste alcuna prova. Adolf adottò il proprio cognome "Hitler" come nome d'arte quando dipingeva.


Il padre di Hitler
Secondo alcuni scrittori,[5][6] Maria Anna Schicklgruber era a Vienna quando rimase incinta, domestica della famiglia Rothschild. Il nonno paterno sarebbe un barone della famiglia Rothschild, il quale non riconobbe il figlio.
I Rothschild erano una famiglia di banchieri, ebrei-tedeschi. Con un nonno ebreo, lo stesso Hitler sarebbe un ebreo-tedesco. I legami poi con una famiglia di banchieri diventerebbero fondamentali per capire l'evolversi della storia. Bisogna aggiungere che tali teorie sono generalmente considerate senza alcun reale riferimento storico.

Bridget Elizabeth Dowling Hitler (alternative Brigid) (1891-1969) was Adolf Hitler's sister-in-law via her marriage to Alois Hitler, Jr.. She was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland.

In 1909, when she was seventeen, she and her father, William Dowling, attended the Dublin Horse Show where they met Alois Hitler, Jr. who claimed to be a wealthy hotelier touring Europe when, in fact, he was a poor waiter at Dublin's Shelbourne Hotel. Alois courted Bridget at various Dublin locales and soon they were discussing marriage. On June 3, 1910 the couple eloped to London. Her father threatened to charge Alois with kidnapping but accepted the marriage after Bridget pleaded with him.

The couple settled at 102 Upper Stanhope Street in Toxteth, Liverpool and, in 1911 they had their only child, William Patrick Hitler. Ironically, the house was destroyed in the last German air-raid on Liverpool on January 10, 1942, and has remained a bomb site ever since.

Alois went to Germany in 1914 to establish himself in business but these plans were interrupted by the outbreak of World War I. Bridget refused to go with him, as he had become violent and started beating their son. Alois decided to abandon his family, he remarried bigamously and sent word after the war that he was dead.

He was charged with bigamy in 1924 but escaped conviction due to Bridget's intervention.

Bridget raised her son alone with no support from her husband from whom she was eventually divorced (although she was religiously opposed to divorce). She set up a home in Hornsey, North London, and took in lodgers to make ends meet.

In 1939, she joined her son on a tour of the United States where he was invited to lecture on his famous uncle. They decided to stay and Bridget wrote a manuscript, My Brother-in-Law Adolf, in which she claimed that her famous brother-in-law had moved to Liverpool to live with Bridget and Alois from November 1912 to April 1913 in order to dodge conscription in his native Austria. She claims that she introduced Adolf to astrology, and that she advised him to trim off the edges of his moustache. She was unable to sell the manuscript and most historians dismiss the work as being a fabrication written in an attempt to cash in on her famous relation. There is no evidence Hitler ever visited his relatives in Liverpool.

Professor Robert Waite refutes her claims that Adolf Hitler had stayed with her as well as most of the rest of her book in the appendix to his The Psychopathic God, Adolf Hitler. According to David Gardiner, Bridget's daughter-in-law has said Bridget admitted to her the book was fanciful.

After the war Bridget and her son settled in Long Island under assumed names. She died there in 1969.

I must apologize for an error in my review of The Memoirs of Bridget Hitler [NYR, June 28]. I there quoted the author's reference to "the ill-fated Count von Spreti" and remarked that since Count von Spreti met his ill fate in 1970, that particular passage in the "memoirs" seemed to be a later interpolation. I had forgotten that there was another equally ill-fated Count von Spreti, who met his ill fate (he was executed on Hitler's orders) in 1934. I therefore withdraw that remark and the inference deduced from it.

Incidentally, since my review was published, I have had an opportunity to see the "original" typescript of Mrs. Hitler's "memoirs" in the New York Public Library, and can say that there are substantial differences between the text as typed and the text as published. The editor of the published text can presumably explain these differences.
