La proposta di “The other side of Israel” al mondo della cultura israeliano
A maggio Israele festeggerà nella più grande vetrina della cultura italiana, la Fiera di Torino, i suoi sessanta anni.
Il primo impulso – la rabbia per l'ennesima strumentalizzazione – ci porta a boicottare.
Ma fermiamoci a pensare un attimo…
Sappiamo che qui si continua a discutere di 2 cose diverse: Israele e cosa il mondo sa di Israele.
Noi continuiamo ad illuderci di combattere i governi israeliani come se non ci accorgessimo che in realtà combattiamo contro un muro: quello mediatico. Pensiamo di parlare alla "gente" e in realtà ci parliamo addosso e ciò che arriva alla "gente" di quanto diciamo o facciamo arriva attraverso il filtro di quel muro.Allora: quando a maggio si accenderanno i riflettori sulla Fiera, cos'è che avrà visto/ascoltato/percepito lo spettatore medio che ci sarà andato (ma anche e soprattutto, attraverso il noto bombardamento giornalistico/televisivo, chi non ci sarà andato)? Ovviamente quegli alfieri della "pace" come Grosmann, Oz & co! Che "mostreranno" indirettamente quanto Israele sia democratico, pluralista ed evoluto presentando le loro voci "critiche".La nostra proposta-provocazione vorrebbe ribaltare mediaticamente il terreno: far apparire loro oscurantisti e razzisti.Come?
1 - Accettando Israele come paese ospite ma
2 - pretendendo dagli organizzatori della Fiera che altri intellettuali israeliani, non solo quelli decisi dal diktat, siano presenti in modo da far conoscere "The other side of Israel".
Non invitano i veri dissidenti? Allora organizziamo un extra Fiera (non un anti-Fiera!) in cui si racconti – dall'interno di Israele - cosa è veramente Israele.
Un evento non urlato, in modo da apparire come coloro che vogliono "aprire" non "chiudere".
Un evento in cui proponiamo, non neghiamo; in cui chi censura saranno ed appariranno loro!
Che tipo di evento?
1 - Una o più giornate di dibattito/confronto sul tema della democrazia israeliana e della reale distanza tra identità ebraica e sionismo (provvisoriamente intitolato "Israele sessant'anni dopo: affinità/divergenze tra lo Stato Ebraico e noi [ebrei]"), da realizzare all'interno del calendario e dell'area della fiera,
2 - in cui partecipino sia un gruppo consistente di autori israeliani non tradotti (o poco conosciuti) in Italia che le solite voci più note e "autorevoli" della letteratura israeliana soprattutto politica (Oz, Grossman, Yehoshua), al fine di garantirne anche una maggiore visibilità;
la Fiera inoltre può essere la migliore opportunità per far conoscere le proprie opere all'utenza e agli editori italiani.
Trasformiamo un sicuro boomerang mediatico (il boicottaggio) in un boomerang per chi vuole fare della Fiera una "vetrina della politica israeliana".
Chiudiamo con un antico detto che, in un mondo mediatizzato diviene ancor più vero: "Gli assenti hanno sempre torto".
Ad oggi gli organizzatori ed il governo israeliano possono ancora dire ai media: "Noi li avevamo invitati ...".



In May, Israel will be celebrating its sixtieth anniversary in the greatest show window of Italian culture, the Turin Book Fair. Our first impulse – anger at yet another manipulation – is the urge to boycott.
But let us stop for a moment to think…
We realise that the discussion here is about two different things: Israel, and what the world knows about Israel.
We go on deluding ourselves that we are fighting the Israeli governments, as if we did not realise that we are actually up against a wall: the media wall. We think we are talking to the “people”, while actually we are just going on and on among ourselves, and what we say or do, only reaches the “people” through the filter of that wall.So: when the spotlights will be turned onto the Fair in May, what will the average person who went here (but also and especially, due to the well known phenomenon of media bombardment, those who did not go) see, hear or perceive? Of course, those heralds of “peace” like Grosmann, Oz & Co! Who will indirectly “show” how democratic, pluralistic and evolved Israel is, by presenting their “critical” voices. Our counter-provocation intends to turn the tables: show them to be close minded racists.How?
1 - By accepting Israel as a guest country, but
2 - Demanding that the organisers of the Fair call other Israeli intellectuals, not only those chosen by diktat, to attend, so as to show "The other side of Israel".
And what if they do not invite the real dissidents? We can then organise an extra-Fair (not an anti-Fair!) where they can say, from inside Israel, what Israel really is. Not a shouting match, because we must appear to be those who want to “open” and not to “close”.
An event where we propose, and do not deny; where it will be they who will be the censors, and appear as such!
What kind of event?
1 - One or more days of debate/discussion on the topic of Israeli democracy, and on the real distance between Jewish identity and Zionism (the provisional title could be “Israel sixty years after: affinity/difference between the Jewish State and us [Jews]”), to be held within the calendar and the area of the fair,
2 - Attended by a sizable group of Israeli authors who have not been translated, or are much less known, in Italy, than the usual “authoritative” voices of Israeli literature, especially political literature (Oz, Grossman, Yehoshua), in order to ensure them greater visibility as well;
the Fair can also be the best opportunity to make one’s works known to Italian readers and publishers.
Let us turn what will certainly be a media boomerang (the boycott) into a boomerang for those who want to turn the Fair into a “show window for Israeli policies”.
An old Italian adage, which is even truer in these media-dominated days: “The absent are always wrong”.
The organisers and the Israeli government can still tell the media, “But we invited them…”
