Citazione:

Einstein, a sacred cow?

Is it possible to criticize, question, or reject Einstein's theories without being called a "crank" for it? If not, then what we're really seeing here is a cult or secular religion centred on the worship of Einstein, the term "crank" being used synonymously with "heretic", not science.

I know there are a lot of "cranks" who attack Einstein; I've read some of their books. There are also men, like Herbert Dingle, who are eminently qualified to speak on the subject, who have doubted Einstein's theories.

What I'm addressing isn't the validity of Einstein's theories, but the intellectual climate (well-exemplified in this article) that has made it impossible to criticize his theories without being ridiculed or labelled a "crank" for it.

Theories are like shoes; you wear them for a while, they start to get holes, and when they have too many, you replace them. Theories which were better-established than Einstein's have gotten the old heave-ho, and I'm sure that future scientists will look back on our time and wonder how we could have been so foolish as to believe half the things we do.

Scientists should not be getting emotionally invested in or attached to theories, which are merely tools and nothing more, and should not be putting other scientists on pedestals like they do Einstein and Darwin.
