I Sonic Youth sono uno dei gruppi fondamentali degli anni '80. Pochi complessi hanno avuto la stessa influenza sui loro contemporanei, in particolare fra le legioni di musicisti alternativi dei college. I Sonic Youth hanno impersonato la figura del musicista che intende trascendere gli stereotipi del proprio tempo ed esplorare nuove forme musicali peraltro rimanendo fedele a un'etica nichilista e alienata come quella dei punk. In tal senso i Sonic Youth sono eredi tanto del punk-rock quanto della new-wave, benche' abbiano poco in comune con esse sia musicalmente sia sociologicamente. Le loro origini sono nella musica classica d'avanguardia, le loro vocazioni (come hanno dimostrato i lavori solisti) sono la musica creativa jazz e rock, le loro personalita` appartengono alle gallerie d'arte e ai circoli intellettuali di New York. Il doppio Daydream Nation (Enigma, 1988) [...] costituisce il summa artistico dei Sonic Youth. Ranaldo, Gordon e Moore ampliano l'affresco amorale della loro Death Valley con una serie di meditazioni infernali sulla desolazione dell'esistenza contemporanea. La confusione orgiastica del loro sound acquista per la prima volta uno spessore morale, e dietro potenti anthem-slogan come Total Trash o Teenage Riot, ispirati al punk-rock progressivo inglese, e lo stesso Daydream Nation (splendida metafora dell'America del boom), si intravede una dura critica sociale.
